WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy surveyed tornado damage in Arabi with St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis and other local officials. They inspected damage near the corner of Friscoville Avenue and Janssen Street. Cassidy also spoke with homeowners on what they need to recover from the tornado.
The tornado struck Arabi on Tuesday night, traveling over 11 miles with peak winds of 160 miles per hour. One person was reported killed. It is the strongest tornado on record to hit the New Orleans metropolitan area.
“Amidst homes terribly damaged, people are coming from other communities to help those affected clean up, provide generators, and to otherwise give hope,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Spirits are high because people care for other people.”
“We are grateful for the speedy engagement by the federal government across the aisle related to this disaster and appreciate U.S. Senator Cassidy personally visiting our community to inspect the damage and meet with residents who lost so much,” said Parish President McInnis.
Additionally, Senator Cassidy announced Tuesday that the federal government is providing an additional $1.72 billion in supplemental disaster aid to help Louisiana recover from hurricanes over the last two years. That includes over $1.2 billion to help the state recover from Hurricane Ida.
