WASHINGTON – Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), John Kennedy (R-LA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) introduced the bipartisan Chimp Sanctuary Act to relocate chimpanzees being held at any U.S. military installation to the Chimp Haven facility in Louisiana. Located in Keithville, Louisiana, Chimp Haven offers chimpanzees a safe place where they can receive quality medical and behavioral care. Currently, there are 34 chimpanzees being held at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, even though they are no longer needed for government research.
“Sanctuaries like Chimp Haven in Keithville, Louisiana are cheaper, healthier, and better solutions to house aging creatures,” said Dr. Cassidy. “It’s time we do what is best for the chimpanzees and the taxpayer.”
Cassidy, Kennedy, and Duckworth were joined by Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM).
