WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), today announced two grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation for infrastructure improvement projects in Louisiana. The state will receive $25 million for widening I-12 and $16.2 million for transportation improvements for Port Fourchon. Cassidy wrote to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao in July in support of both grant applications.
“These resources will go toward critical infrastructure projects in Louisiana that will create jobs and support economic growth. Widening I-12 will eliminate unsafe bottlenecks in St. Tammany Parish, and a new bridge and roadwork connecting South Lafourche Airport, Highway 1, and Port Fourchon will facilitate industrial traffic and improve highway safety,” said Dr. Cassidy. “During our phone call this morning I gave a big thank you to Secretary Chao for listening to our needs and approving these resources.”
In August, Secretary Chao joined Cassidy in New Orleans to formally mark the award of $45 million in federal funds for the Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement project. During the visit Secretary Chao also announced a $2.5 million award for the Port of New Orleans to support the current container-on-barge shuttle service operated by SEACOR AMH between New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Memphis, and to launch a new container-on-barge shuttle service on the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC) in New Orleans.
