Cassidy Welcomes Trump Administration’s Commitment to Protecting Pro-Life Health Care Professionals from Discrimination

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, welcomed the Trump Administration’s formation of a new Conscience and Religious Freedom Division within the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The division will more vigorously and effectively enforce existing laws protecting the rights of conscience and religious freedom.

“The freedom to live out your faith is one of America’s founding principles,” said Dr. Cassidy. “No one should be forced to violate their conscience or religious beliefs, and I’m glad the Trump Administration is stepping up its efforts to defend the rights of pro-life health care professionals and protect them from discrimination.”

Cassidy is a cosponsor of the Conscience Protection Act (S. 301), legislation that would protect health care providers, including health care professionals, entities and health insurance plans from government discrimination if they decline to facilitate abortions.
