Cassidy Announces $10 Million for Lafayette Road Construction Project

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today announced that Lafayette is receiving $10 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) to finish construction of the University Avenue corridor. DoT Secretary Elaine Chao notified Cassidy this morning about the grant.

“Anytime we get federal funds for Louisiana roads, it’s a good thing. This project allows traffic to flow more smoothly while creating jobs. I appreciate Sec. Chao and the Trump administration for investing in Lafayette,” said Dr. Cassidy, who authored a letter of support advocating for the grant

The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) plans to use the funds to finish construction of the University Avenue Corridor project.  The remaining work consists of engineering and construction of Phases 2 and 3.  To date, the LCG has spent $7.3 million on the entire project.  Phases 2 and 3 include the construction of a multi-modal corridor along North University Avenue from Walker Road to Renaud Drive.  This section is intersected by Interstate I-10 and connects parts of Lafayette to the interstate.  The project also seeks to reduce congestion, increase safety, and improve connectivity to the adjacent neighborhoods.
