WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today applauded Venture Global LNG’s plans to capture and sequester carbon at its Calcasieu Pass and Plaquemines LNG facilities in Louisiana.
“There’s no better place to sequester carbon than Louisiana. This project is a win for the environment, a win for jobs, and a win for infrastructure,” said Dr. Cassidy.
Venture Global estimates it will capture and sequester an estimated 500,000 tons of carbon per year from its Calcasieu Pass and Plaquemines liquefaction sites.
In March, Cassidy introduced the Storing CO2 and Lowering Emissions (SCALE) Act – the nation’s first comprehensive carbon dioxide infrastructure bill.
The bill would support the buildout of infrastructure to transport CO2 from the sites of capture to locations where it can be either utilized in manufacturing or sequestered safely and securely underground. The legislation would also provide critical regional economic opportunities and create thousands of jobs.
Louisiana already has two critical pieces in place to become a significant national hub for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) – a sizable industrial base that would benefit economically from CCS options to help manage its carbon emissions, and large-scale geologic storage opportunities with immense potential for total storage.
The state’s existing refining and petrochemical industries can move quickly on carbon capture deployment due to key existing industrial processes producing relatively pure streams of CO2, low costs of capture, advantages of scale, and existing expertise.
Louisiana already has the nation’s greatest density of industrial gas and petroleum products pipelines, providing rights of way and built-in transportation expertise can be harnessed to support the buildout of CO2 pipeline infrastructure networks to serve that industrial base.
