WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) delivered a fiery speech on the Senate floor today to call out Democrats for blocking consideration of the JUSTICE Act, a bill that reforms the policing practices in the wake of national protests demanding change.
Cassidy is a cosponsor of U.S. Senator Tim Scott’s (R-SC) bill to bring real, practical changes to policing practices to address police brutality and build trust between police and disenfranchised communities. Republicans planned an open amendment debate, which meant Democrats could have offered amendments. Instead, they simply refused to work with Republicans to bring about the type of institutional change demanded by the American people.
“Maybe they blocked it because it doesn’t include the Democratic Party’s new wish list item, defunding and abolishing police forces,” Dr. Cassidy said. “Perhaps Democrats knew that if they offered an amendment to the Justice Act to defund police, then their members would be forced to vote on the measure, rather than pay lip service to an idea that’s going nowhere to appease a radical base.”
Cassidy also took aim at anarchists who are defacing national monuments, destroying statues of American heroes like George Washington, and establishing so-called autonomous zones in Democrat-controlled cities.
“The mob is establishing so-called ‘police free zones,” an absurd promise for a utopian society that is, in fact, full of crime as evidenced by the recent shootings in the Seattle CHOP zone. At this point, the anarchists’ goal isn’t justice for George Floyd; it’s about displaying their hatred for America,” said Dr. Cassidy, who introduced a resolution with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) to designate Antifa as a domestic terror organization.
