Cassidy: Louisiana Seafood Industry Receives Support from Federal COVID Relief Efforts

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. today announced that the Louisiana seafood industry can expect to benefit from two federal COVID-19 relief measures.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is purchasing $30 million worth of U.S.-produced shrimp to distribute to communities in need. The shrimp will go to federal nutrition aid programs through the Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Separate from the USDA’s action, $14 million from the CARES Act has been made available for those in Louisiana’s fishery industry. Those seeking relief should submit applications to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to determine eligibility for assistance.

“Louisiana’s seafood industry has been devastated by the COVID-19 lockdown. This federal assistance supports shrimpers and fishermen in a time when they need it most,” said Dr. Cassidy.
