WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) released a statement following the Senate blockage of his amendment, introduced with U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA), to the FY 2022 Omnibus Appropriations bill to add $2.5 billion for disaster aid, including $500 million to rebuild ports.
After the September passage of $600 million in Hurricane Laura and Delta relief for Southwest Louisiana and $5 billion for states impacted by Hurricane Ida, the Louisiana delegation continued to push the Biden administration and their congressional colleagues to deliver additional aid.
“Sadly, the Senate has chosen to block critical relief to Louisiana and all communities affected by natural disasters. President Biden’s decision not to include additional disaster funding in his request to Congress was a blow to Louisiana families who have struggled under years of devastating storms” said Dr. Cassidy. “This is unacceptable to the thousands of Louisiana families still trying to recover. I will not stop trying to secure this relief.”
On March 9th, Cassidy announced he would not vote for the FY 2022 Omnibus Appropriations bill if it does not include disaster relief for Louisiana.
Cassidy spoke on the Senate floor to urge is colleagues to support the amendment prior to the vote.
