Cassidy Votes to Crack Down on Sanctuary Cities, Secure the Border

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), released the following statement regarding several immigration proposals the Senate failed to advance today:

“I voted for Senator Toomey’s amendment to crack down on sanctuary cities that refuse to help enforce our immigration laws. If cities won’t help protect Americans from criminals, they shouldn’t get taxpayer money.

“I voted for Senator Grassley’s measure based on President Trump’s proposal. We must stop human trafficking, money laundering and drug trafficking. This amendment provided real border security and discouraged future human trafficking. As a compromise, it also addressed Democrats’ concerns. This was the only bill that could become law. If Democrats truly wished to solve immigration issues, they should have supported this bill.”

Amendment 1948, offered by Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA), comprises the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act.

Amendment 1959, offered by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), comprises the Secure and Succeed Act, which is supported by Tom Cotton (R-AR), Joni Ernst (R-IA), James Lankford (R-OK), and David Perdue (R-GA), and Thom Tillis (R-NC).
