WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), released the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced the Senate will add three weeks of votes to the calendar in August.
“I’m glad Leader McConnell is seeking to honor our request to work longer hours in the Senate. Republicans have accomplished a lot over the past year, but I believe we can achieve even more,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We need to pass a sensible spending plan instead of getting stuck with a bad one at the last minute. And as long as Washington Democrats obstruct the president’s nominees just for the sake of resistance, we should keep the Senate open as long as necessary to get the job done.”
As of today, Senate Democrats have slowed the Senate by forcing cloture votes on 100 nominees. By comparison, there were only 24 cloture votes in the first two years of the last six presidents—combined.
Last month, Cassidy and 15 of his Senate colleagues asked Leader McConnell to keep the Senate in session to expedite floor consideration of funding bills and President Trump’s nominees, before the end of the fiscal year, September 30.
