Cassidy Celebrates His 11th National Seersucker Day

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. and more than eight Members of Congress participated in National Seersucker Day. This marked the 11th year that Cassidy has led National Seersucker Day since he revived the tradition in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014.

“Today, we celebrate the good-humored Congressional tradition of National Seersucker Day. The seersucker suit is a uniquely American and beloved New Orleans staple,” said Dr. Cassidy. “While we missed the late Senator Feinstein this year, it was great to carry on this tradition with Senator Warnock.”

“More than just a fashion statement, National Seersucker Day is a wonderful, bipartisan tradition with Southern roots that helps unite Americans through our shared love of chic and comfortable summer clothing,” said Senator Warnock. “I was thrilled to co-chair this effort with Senator Cassidy to celebrate seersucker’s special cultural and sartorial contributions to our country.”

Seersucker suits were popularized by a New Orleans businessman in the early 1900s. Former U.S. Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) brought Seersucker Thursday to Congress in 1996. After the tradition went unobserved in 2012 and 2013, Dr. Cassidy revived National Seersucker Day in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 and has continued the tradition in the Senate with the help of Senator Feinstein through 2023.

Cassidy and Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) also introduced a resolution to establish June 13, 2024, the eleventh annual National Seersucker Day.
