WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) released the following statement after meeting with Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ana Cecilia Gervasi. Cassidy expressed support for Peru’s constitutional order in the aftermath of former President José Castillo’s coup attempt, which thrust the country into months of unrest.
“The United States must always stand with constitutional democracies when they are being threatened by lawless mobs,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I told of our support for President Boluarte, her government, and the freedom-loving people of Peru to the foreign minister.”
Background
Cassidy was the first U.S. senator to speak out in support of Peru’s constitutional order in December. He renewed his call for an end to the violence last week as well.
